Presentation Skills for Legal Professionals

This course offers the opportunity to develop the delivery skills vital to successful pitches, conference speeches and mediation or advocacy. The course covers a wide range of topics from dealing with nerves and audience psychology to presentation structure and vocal techniques.

The programme has been designed to provide a comprehensive toolkit of presenting and public speaking skills as well as the ‘live’ presentation experience vital to confident delivery in the future. Every delegate receives individual video feedback from our experts to help refine their delivery technique.

 Overview

In any kind of business the ability to present powerfully can be invaluable in gaining and retaining customers, communicating your vision and expressing your ideas. However, for legal professionals and their clients even more can often hinge on the clarity, persuasiveness and confidence of a single delivery.

The good news is that all of the skills to deliver first-class presentations, pitches and speeches can be learnt, and during this highly interactive and practical programme you will have the chance to build a wealth of valuable skills and techniques that will have an immediate impact on your confidence and public speaking skills.

Through video taped presentations you will have the chance to monitor and modify verbal and nonverbal cues, and will receive expert advice on implementing simple changes that will make a remarkable and positive difference.

Many delegates have arrived feeling apprehensive about public speaking, but have left excited at the prospect of their next presentation - an opportunity to show off their new skills. Our small, friendly groups led by an expert course leader offer an opportunity to build skills and confidence quickly and painlessly.

Who would benefit from this course?

This course is relevant to anyone who has to deliver presentations as part of their job - whether internally or to other organisations. When delivered in-house for a law firm or legal department we will work with you to adapt the content to your specific needs and those of the delegates. This may involve, for example, extra sessions on dealing with difficult questions or on pursuasive pitching.

 Full list of learning outcomes:

On completion of this programme participants will:

  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in presentation style
  • Recognise barriers to successful communication and presentation
  • Understand opportunities and problems associated with audience memory and retention
  • Effectively structure a presentation to maintain audience interest
  • Use the voice to persuade and influence an audience
  • Recognise the pitfalls of body language and visual aids
  • Listen to and answer audience questions effectively
  • Deal with nerves when presenting
  • Improve their current presentation style

 Key issues addressed:

Feeling more relaxed, confident and natural presenting
You will learn how to confront your nerves, manage and control them and make their impact positive rather than negative. By learning to conquer show-stopping nerves and arming yourself with a tool kit of techniques to deal with difficult situations effectively, you can focus on delivering excellent results rather than avoiding embarrassment.

 Improving your current technique
There will be ample time for your personal strengths and learning needs to be assessed and acted on. Your course leader will offer you concrete tips and suggestions that will have an instant impact on how you come across. Some may be extremely simple, but could make a huge difference. Through the use of the video camera you will be able to take part in the assessment, looking at your performance from an audience member’s position. This can be eye opening!

 Delivering exciting, memorable presentations
You will learn the dos and don’t of structuring and planning your presentation for maximum impact. A well devised presentation maintains audience attention and draws them in, involving them in your ideas. Careful use of body language and vocal techniques will also be taught, giving you an arsenal of psychological tactics to help influence your audience.

 Practice makes perfect
During the day you will have the opportunity to deliver two presentations. The first is used to assess your current style, and the second to put your new skills into practice. You will have a chance to view your performances on video, and may find the transformation startling!

 Other topics covered
